Heavy hitters at X-Games 15!

Coming into X-Games for the second time, we expected nothing less than the best in the world to be there, and that was what we found! This was the first time that Matt had a chance to get on the new 450 KTM and race it. During practice on Friday, Matt went out and just figured out what he needed to do and where he needed to be. We really had no time to make to many drastic changes to the bike because they had 1 hour of practice followed immediatly by 1 hour of qualifying. Everything looked and went well during practice and Matt seemed to be right on pace of all the fast guys, then we began the timed secession and things began to heat up! First few laps around he kept seeing P. 17 or P.18 with a good 2 to 3 second gap from the leaders, and that is just something Matt is not customed to seeing on his pit board. Everytime he came around, his lap times were getting faster and faster, as were everyone elses. He ended up shaving off a little over 2 seconds in that secession and came out with 16th fastest lap time for the main event. After qualifying it was time to figure out how to go faster, Matt came in and we talked about how to make it better, we made quite a few changes to the bike and he went out on it Saturday morning for the practice secession on a completely different set-up. He said he like it but was having trouble turning in the corners. So between that 8 A.M. practice on Saturday and the main event at 1:30 he decided that he wanted to completley go the opposite way with the bike set up. Now he was going out to the main event with a set up he had not rode all week and told himself that he was "just going to ride it and MAKE it work!" That is the kind of mentality this kid has, and that is what he did! After the 2 sighting laps of the main event he came over, gave me a thumbs up and said "lets do this!". He got on the grid and had gained one more position due to James Stewart getting hurt, so now he was 15th on the grid next to Steve Drew on the very outside of the track. The light went green and he immediatly got pinched off as they went down the straight. he came out of the first turn in 18th or 19th place, within the next two corners he was up to 13th where he ran a considerable portion of the race chasing Dan Casey, until someone had a mechanical and they gained another position putting him in 12th. Throughout the race, Matt made numerous charges at #40, but just couldn't get them to stick, so he ended up settling for a 12th at X-Games 15!  Be sure to watch the helmet cam on the Media page to see it from the view of #39!!

Another win in VEGAS!!

Monday June 1, 2009 was a good day for #39, from the first practice until the checker flags were thrown, everything went well! During qualifying, they eliminated the free practice secession that everyone usually gets before qualifying starts, so when we hit the track it was business time since Matt is 2nd in points, he doesn't get to ride promoter practice day or amateur day like the rest of the field does. But it didn't seem to bother him at all because after the 2 qualifiers were over, he was over a half a second faster than the guy in second! The heat race came around and Dan Casey came out of the arena in first, but it was only a matter of turns before Matt slipped by and put an 8 second lead on the field! Now it was main event time and things had been going well all day, so why change?! Matt pulled the hole shot in the main and led every lap, finishing the race with over a minute lead! The points are closed up now to just 2 away from that #1 spot again with 2 more points races to go! Next stop on the schedule looks like X-Games 15!!!!

Springfield Doesn't Like the Number 39!

Well Springfield 2009 wasn't the best for #39 this year, but it was much worse for other people! The day started off great, seeing 9th fastest after timed qualifying! On the line for the heat, Matt get a good start then must have got pulled into a rut and started to slightly loose balance as he was heading into the first turn, he came over the jump in 7th the first time and within a matter of turns he was by the two guys ahead and had his eyes set on #80y Steve Bonsey running a ways ahead in 4th, the final transfer position! No more than a lap went by and he was all over the young Bonsey pressuring him for the position. He tried every which line to make the move, but just couldn't stick it and he ended up settling for 5th in the heat. Now it was LCQ time and he was on the pole for that race. The light went green and he was right behind Jesse Janisch #45 as they entered the first turn and BAM someone came in and cleaned Matt off his bike! Now the red flag was out and they were back on the line except this time was was on the 4th row because he fell. Light went green again and he got another great start, he made his way all the way up to 5th or 6th behind #40 Aaron King, but it just wasn't enough to make the 18 rider cut to the main event... Peoria here we come!

Bad luck at Infineon!

Coming into race day at Sonoma, Matt knew he had his work cut out for him! After plenty of discussion, we knew what we had to do to get it done on Sunday. When we arrived at the track on Sunday, temperatures were rising and it was hot, by the end of the day it was expected to hit 105 degrees, the water drinking was ON! Qualifying went well, Matt ended up 2nd overall behind Dan Casey #40.  Lined up for the heat race, Matt pulled the hole shot and was out front for only a short time before he slipped up and Dan went under him. He followed Dan the whole heat race, pressuring him off and on to get a feel for what the main event was going to be like. Dan came home with the heat race win and Matt was 2nd on the grid for the main just like he was in the Heat Race.
Main event time rolls around and Matt was not feeling the greatest, but was still ready to get the show on. Going to the track , he said " I think I have what it takes to win today, I think I can outlast Dan" as it was basically an endurance race due to the high temperature! He got on the grid and they gave them the sighting lap, instantanly into Matts sighting lap he came rushing back to the starting line with his hands in the air, he had NO rear brakes. With the time limit for the race to start and the option of switching bikes, we had no other choice but to line up on the front row and race for points with no rear brakes due to the time we had to fix the bike and the chance of missing the start completely. It wasn't easy to learn to ride with no rear brakes for him, but he continually got faster as the day went on, and came home with a 6th place finish, to put him in 2nd place in points, 5 back from Dan Casey. Off to Springfield this weekend for a flattrack, and excited to get back on top of the box next week in Las Vegas!

First win for Burton & KTM!

We arrived in Fontana, California Thursday the 19th after being in the truck for 30 hours, got some rest and hit the track early Friday morning for promoter practice. Matt started out riding his new KTM to get the set up dialed before race day. After a few sessions on the track, we had both bikes dialed to spec and ready for race day! Saturday was our day off, and with racing in conjunction to the Road Race, we went over and checked that out on Saturday! Sunday was the big day, woke up to rain on the ground, when we got to the track, XTRM had modified the schedule to just one un-timed practice, a timed qualifier then a main event (no second qualifier or heats). We put the rain tires on and went out in the first practice to get a feel for the rain since Matt doesn't have as much experience in the rain as some of the other competetion. He felt great coming off the track in the rain and was ready to qualify. Early in the qualifier he set the fastest time and maintained it throughout the whole session. He was on the pole for the main event with a gap of 1.007 seconds to the second place rider.
Things began to dry up and the rain moved out right after the qualifiers were over. During the lunch break we swapped out the rains for slicks and got ready for the Final. Sitting on the pole in the main event, Matt didn't get the hole shot, but #40 Danny Casey did. Matt tailed Danny for about 5 laps before deciding to make a move. Coming into the dirt section Matt got a good run through the whoops and tucked to the inside getting ahead of Danny. It wasn't over yet, because Dan came back around the outside as they went over the double, they ran side by side through the flattrack corner before coming back on the pavement. Matt was to the inside and Dan leaned a bit on Matt which ended up with Danny Casey crashing out and Matt having a clear track ahead! Matt set sail and never looked back, taking himself and KTM to their first Lites main event win!

Be sure to check out the MEDIA page for a helmet cam video from the main event!

Burton goes all KTM for 09'

Orange is the color for 09, Burton is excited for the 2009 race season kicking off March 4-5, 2009 in Daytona Beach, Florida at the famed Daytona Municipal Stadium. While Burton has been training in the gym getting not only physically but mentally prepared for the season kick off, step-father and mechanic Rick Canode has been busy preparing an all new flattrack bike for #39. With help from MDK Speed Equipment, Canode has prepared a KTM Flattrack program to pair up with the orange supermoto platform! Good luck to Matt and Team RJ/MDK/KTM!
